Code of Conduct

CAMPDEN SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT

EXPECTATIONS

We believe parents, students and staff have rights, and that with these rights come certain responsibilities.

RIGHTS OF PARENTS

Parents have their most precious possessions invested in the school - their children. Therefore, we believe parents at Campden School have the right to:

- be welcomed at the school and encouraged to openly discuss the policy and procedures of our school;- have their children receive an education in a warm, pleasant and safe environment;
- be welcomed and encouraged to become involved in the wide variety of our school activities, including the School Council;
- expect a challenging, interesting program for their children, one which is fair to all and meets the Province of Ontario and District School Board of Niagara guidelines and standards;
- receive continuous feedback as to their children's academic, social and physical performance;
- be well informed concerning special student events, class trips and parent evenings;
- receive the support, respect and cooperation of the school.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS

We believe parents have the responsibility to:

- send their children to school with the proper nutrition, personal hygiene, sleep, clothing and equipment so that students can participate fully in school activities, allowing them to develop to their potential;
- support the school through an awareness of and a positive attitude towards its policies, procedures, property, staff, students and other parents;
- ensure students attend school regularly and are punctual;
- read school newsletter and information sheets to be aware of special events;
- complete and return on time permission or other forms as needed by the school;
- encourage their children to become involved in the total school program;
- be actively involved in supporting and assisting the education of their children at home and in school.

RIGHTS OF STUDENTS

We believe that students at Campden School have the right to:

- be respected as an individual;
- have an equal opportunity in education;
- a safe, happy environment at school, while travelling to and from school, free from verbal and physical abuse;
- expect fair and just treatment from all adults of the community in regards to performance and conduct;
- receive required help in regards to academic, emotional or social assistance;
- have the opportunity to express to a trusted adult their concerns;
- learn in a clean, safe, supportive and positive environment;
- feel safe and secure from verbal and physical harassment.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS

We believe students have the responsibility to:

- show respect and courtesy to all staff, parents, guests, other students;
- work to the best of their ability in all areas of school life;

- obey crossing guards and bus patrols at all times;
- show self discipline;
- know and follow the rules of our school;
- attend class regularly and on time;
- care for school and community property and the personal property of others;
- complete in-school and homework assignments on time and to the best of their ability;
- take home and/or return information letters or permission forms;
- adhere to deadlines;
- be active in school life and to properly represent Campden School at all times;
- observe the Code of Conduct.

RIGHTS OF STAFF

We believe that staff members at Campden School have the right to:

- receive the support, respect and cooperation of the school community;
- exercise sufficient flexibility to deal with the needs and interests of students, parents and fellow staff as individuals;
- expect students to comply with reasonable requests;
- expect students to complete assignments to the best of their ability;
- expect students to behave in a cooperative attentive manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF STAFF

We believe staff members have the responsibility to:

- respect each child as an individual;
- attempt to meet the individual needs of their students;
- encourage and assist all children to actively participate in all aspects of school life;
- provide a safe and trustworthy environment for students and parents to express their concerns;
- work towards the goal of providing an inviting, safe school;
- provide a program that is challenging, that meets the guidelines of the Province of Ontario and the District School Board of Niagara, and strives to accommodate the learning styles/needs of the students;
- exercise fair discipline strategies to promote a healthy learning environment for students;
- maintain a variety of appropriate evaluation techniques to ascertain students' progress;
- maintain their professional development to model the concept of a self-motivated, life-long learner;
- keep parents informed regarding the behaviour and academic progress of their children.

Children at Campden School will be provided with the opportunities to be successful.

THEREFORE:

On the playground students are expected to:

- play in a manner that avoids rough body contact (punching, shoving, wrestling, etc.);
- remain on school property;
- refrain from the use of obscene language and gestures;
- refrain from fighting;
- obtain permission from the supervising teacher before re-entering the building;
- respond to the bell immediately;
- line up in an orderly fashion outside the school awaiting re-entry following
recess, etc.;
- respect those areas where skipping or court games are in progress;
- refrain from entering the wooded area;
- refrain from riding bicycles, skateboards, roller blades and scooters on the schoolyard from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (later if a school activity is in progress);
- use the playground equipment in a responsible and safe manner;
- refrain from throwing harmful materials (snowballs, sticks, stones, etc.);
- refrain from littering.

In the school students are expected to:

- adhere to the Dress Code:

Campden School encourages students to dress in a manner which reflects respect for themselves and for others conducive to an academic atmosphere. Clothing which is suggestive or offensive will not be accepted. This applies to both boys and girls and includes such items as halter and tank tops, muscle shirts, tight shirts/jeans/pants. Short-shorts and tops which show the midriff are not for school wear, as are overly loose pants which are not belted properly. Short skirts which ride up farther than mid-way between the knee and pelvis when walking or sitting are also not suitable. Shirts of any kind that have inappropriate comments or pictures are also not allowed at Campden School. Staff reserve the right to speak with students concerning their attire.

- be neat and clean in their person and habits;
- exercise diligence in their studies and assignments;
- be responsible in the use and care of texts, library books, desks and other school property;
- remove hats when inside the building;
- receive permission to use the telephone;
- use the Student Organizer consistently.

During the nutrition breaks students are expected to:

- remain seated until the 10:45 a.m. bell and the 1:05 p.m. bell;
- tidy their eating area;
- recycle as much of their lunch packaging as possible;
- leave the building as quickly and quietly as possible prepared to stay outside for the remainder of the lunch period (use washrooms, etc. before leaving);
- leave all pop cans, juice boxes and other food wrappers and bags in the school.

During a Fire Drill students are expected to:

- follow all instructions given by the teacher/supervisor/principal;
- refrain from shouting or making loud sounds;
- move quickly, safety and quietly out of the building using the route outlined for the area in which they are present eg. classroom, gym, community room, etc.;
- remain in the designated safety zone outside the building until
asked to re-enter the building;

While riding buses, student must:

- exercise care, caution and good manners and consideration for others;
- avoid anything which might disturb the driver or interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle;
- not throw any objects inside the bus or out the bus window;
- obey promptly the instructions of the driver and the bus patroller;
- keep all parts of the body inside the vehicle at all times;
- ensure that any objects or materials that could harm others or cause a safety hazard are not brought onto the bus (eg. hockey sticks, skateboards, weapons and replicas, ice skates or basketballs carried outside sports bag, etc.).
